This isn’t necessarily a new class, because basic life skills classes are offered to special education students. However, I think that a more advanced set of like skills could also be very useful to regular students.
This class would teach students ways to deal with everyday problems and scenarios by explaining in a very basic sense the way that our society’s most frequently used systems function. This would in turn allow the students to develop a troubleshooting logic, whereby they can begin to problem solve.
For instance, it could teach the students how the internet works (the basic concepts of this computer talks to this server which tells this company xyz). This would lead to the students learning safe practices on the internet that would prevent identity theft or viral infections.
It could also teach the students the basic way that a car functions, which would help them then learn useful skills like how to change a tire or jumpstart a car.
Understanding basic public and private plumbing would help students learn how to unclog drain and toilets, replace leaky faucets, and understand in the importance of water filtration and conservation.
The applications really are endless. There are so many systems that we use everyday and simply do not understand. A life skills class like this could help each individual become more capable and self-reliant.
