Attention Barking

Attention-seeking barking is when your dog barks for a request from you. Correcting this type of barking requires patience and a strong will. The technique is similar to dealing with a whining child-- the "whining" or barking will stop when the dog realizes that it is ineffective and he is not getting what he wants. If the dog is barking to get your attention, ignore it. Don’t open the door to let him out, don’t pick up the ball, don’t go get the leash. In actuality, it’s hard to ignore a barking dog (as is a whining, crying child), and when you initially ignore the barking, the dog may decide to bark more. With patience from you, your dog will eventually realize that barking no longer works to get what he wants from you. He will try something else to get your attention. As long as what he does is acceptable to you, reward the new behavior with attention, praise, and a treat (food or a toy). If it’s something unacceptable, ignore that behavior until he tries something you like.
